Innergy: new technology for windows and doors

293 ic_innergy_weissInnergy has been presented at the the fensterbau / frontale trade fair 2014 by Inoutic. According to the main experts, Innergy material will opens up completely new window and door design options with its outstanding thermal insulation properties, while simultaneously offering a high level of rigidity.

Innergy is produced using pultrusion technology: continuous glass fibres are impregnated with a duroplastic resin (polyurethane). The material is then pulled through a heated stationary die. The resin undergoes polymerisation and the part is given its final shape.

Through the combination of key characteristic properties, Innergy profiles offer an innovative, new architectural approach, combining the mechanical performance of aluminium with resin’s thermal insulating properties. Thermal conductivity is 400 times lower than in aluminium, but thermal expansion is also four times lower. Therefore, there is no deformation caused by the bimetallic effect. The material is 20 times harder than PVC too and provides a hard-wearing surface finish. The high glass fibre content ensures window and door stability without the need for steel reinforcement.

The 'Innergy balcony door' received the Innovation Award for Architecture + Window Door Façade in 2014.

More information about Innergy prototype can be found in our database (Windows category).

Implementing the EPBD – European Energy Performance Country Reports

Implemeneting the EPBD_2016_1350x900

The European portal for energy efficiency in buildings (BUILD UP) has launched the 4th book of the series “Implementing the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) – Featuring Country Reports”. It highlights the important advances achieved across the EU in implementing the EPBD in the period 2012-2015. It is however a self-standing book, as it contains all the pertinent updated information for each country.

Part A of the book describes the main accomplishments and the remaining challenges on a selection of major topics covered by the EPBD across Europe.

Part B of the book contains reports from the 28 EU Members States plus Norway. In two cases (Belgium and the UK), separate reports are available for different jurisdictions that have their own autonomy to implement the EPBD. The individual national and regional reports contain a snapshot of the status of implementation at the end of 2014 or, in other cases, sometime during 2015.

Detailed information can be found on the BUILD UP website.

Solar Air Heating with SolarWall 2-Stage

246              SolarWall® 2-Stage has been configured to deliver a higher temperature rise – up to 36-100 °F ( 20-55 °C) above ambient temperature. It is also ideally suited for windy locations and roof-mount projects. It operates on the same premise as the original SolarWall® technology in that outside air is heated and drawn into an air cavity via tiny mirco-perforations in the SolarWall collector. With the 2-Stage system, the air is then heated a second time (which boosts the temperature rise) as it passes though a second stage of the system. The solar heated air is then directed into the building’s ventilation system – or through a dedicated SolarWall fan & ducting system – where it is distributed throughout the building.

Advantages:

-Higher energy output that substantially lowers heating bills.

-Delivers significantly more thermal energy (as much as 50%) than a conventional low-flow SolarWall® system.

-Heats air 36-100 ˚F (20-55 ˚C) above ambient on a sunny day.

-Maintenance free Up to 10+ LEED® Points Heats fresh air and improves indoor air quality.

-Destratification savings for industrial buildings.

-Provides both space heating & ventilation air heating.

-Huge reduction in CO2 emissions Building integrated. -variety of colours

Switchable technology of SageGlass

SageGlass swithchable technology is a electrochromic technology, which is controllable, so it can be tinted or cleared by the user (or building system) on demand. Its purpose is solar control since it modulates both incoming light and heat from the sun.  SageGlass is not intended to provide privacy. That is an entirely different product with a completely different purpose.  Privacy glass is used to block the view, so it’s often found in interior areas such as board rooms and bathrooms.   SageGlass is designed to block unwanted sunlight, heat and glare – but to continuously preserve the view.

SageGlass nanotechnology incorporates layers of coatings on glass, which in total are less than 1/50th the thickness of a human hair (figure B). The coatings are applied using sputter deposition, which is a tried and true, low-cost, low-risk manufacturing process that has been used for decades to manufacture millions of square feet of low-e glass.

sageglass

What SageGlass is not:

Thermochromic technology modulates the amount of light coming through the glass in response to changing environmental temperatures (such as sunlight exposure, air temperature and wind velocity).  People don’t have control over the glass.

Photochromic technology modulates the amount of light coming through the glass in response to changing light levels outside (think of transition sunglasses).  People don’t have control over the glass.

Suspended particle devices tint and clear in a manner that looks like electrochromics but at the micro-level it’s actually very different. It’s “organic” technology, meaning there are polymer-based materials sandwiched in the glass. Any time you expose organic materials to things like intense sunlight, UV and infrared heat, you have to worry about durability. Also, the technology significantly underperforms SageGlass in both light control and energy reduction.
